The fifth annual Northeast Small Farm and Rural Living Expo and Trade Show will be held September 17 and 18, Saturday and Sunday, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. This year’s Expo will be held at the GDS Fairgrounds in Newfoundland, PA, located minutes off exit 17 of I-84. The Expo will feature over 50 educational workshops, a farmer’s market with fresh locally-grown produce, children’s activities, and country music entertainment. Tickets will be sold at the gate - $5 for adults, children 14 and under are admitted free.

Northeast Organic Farming Association announces the completion of a brand new manual series: ten handbooks that present the most proven and successful practices of organic farmers around the region. It’s the NOFA Organic Principles and Practices Handbook Series, funded by the NOFA Interstate Council, NOFA/Mass and SARE.

Small farmers in the Central New York region have the opportunity to visit other farms to see innovative practices being implemented by both fellow farmers and Cornell researchers. The South Central New York Cornell Cooperative Extension Agriculture Program has arranged a total of 11 farm tours that will be held throughout the summer at farms throughout the region. Thanks to the continued generosity of the Toward Sustainability Foundation (TSF), the Department of Horticulture at Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) has announced the award of over $50,000 in competitive grants funding for research, teaching, and outreach projects in organic farming systems.

Should You Have Crop Insurance? This Small Farm Does.Mary Heyer produces and sells food that she calls “natural, safe, attractive and affordable.” She and her partner Frank, now retired from his work in the city, purchased the farm in 1987 because they wanted to return to the land. Their 160 acres sit on the flood plain of the Wallkill River just north of New Paltz, in Ulster County, NY. They grow vegetables, herbs, strawberries, raspberries, poultry, eggs and hay. Some of the farmland is rented and they also board horses.

A new, three-year study is being undertaken at Cornell entitled “Factors influencing viability of small and mid-size dairy farms in New York State.” The project is a collaborative effort involving researchers from Development Sociology, Animal Science, Applied Economics and Management, as well as Cornell Cooperative Extension educators throughout the state. The Cornell Small Farms Program brought the project team together last year in response to input from farmers, and is also a partner in the effort.
